Assigns and directs work of subordinate groundskeepers; inspects work in progress and completed work by District personnel and outside contractors to insure compliance with specifications and plans; assists in training employees; assists in directing major projects, such as returfing athletic fields, installing sprinkler systems, planting trees, or applying pest control spray and other chemicals; maintains work records and inventory records or supplies and equipment.

Takes responsibility for and performs more complex, technical and skilled gardening and landscaping duties; plant, mows, trims, weeds, fertilizes and waters lawns, flower beds and fields; cuts and lays sod; trims shrubs, hedges and trees; sprays flowers and shrubs with insecticides; sweeps, hoses down and/or removes snow from walkways, drives, parking areas and bleachers; rakes or vacuums leaves; and does general ground cleaning by gathering trash and debris for burning or hauling away.

Cleans and repairs or replaces sprinkler heads; installs or repairs sprinkler systems; repairs fences, resets fencepost and fastens wire; mixes cement and installs signs and posts; patches asphalt areas and installs parking bumpers; and paints traffic and parking marks on curbs, drives and parking lots.

Assembles, installs, safety checks and repairs playground and athletic equipment; resurfaces and marks tracks and athletic fields for games and practices; and levels and repacks track areas.

Performs minor carpentry or painting on signs, bleachers, press boxes and athletic equipment; lays cement for walkways, curbs and gutters; operates mowers, tractors, backhoes, graders, trucks and related equipment and machinery; loads and transports equipment and supplies; performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on small engines.

If assigned specialized pesticide and herbicide application duties: operates a variety of spray equipment both hand pump and power activated; prepares spray mix according to prescribed formulas; applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and rodenticides to control plant disease, noxious weeds, insects, animal pests; maintains work records and inventory records of supplies; prepares and maintains timely spray schedules; performs maintenance on spray equipment as needed; may supervise other employees in chemical application.

May be called upon on off-hours for school emergencies, such as burglaries, vandalism, fires, snow removal, equipment failures, flooding, etc.
