The Neighbor Network of Northern Nevada ("N4" for short) is a blend of the senior village movement and time banking. Our programs are fully inclusive, however. (Not just for seniors.) One of time banking's widely accepted core values is reciprocity, so our orientation teaches members about having a reciprocal relationship. N4 is not successful because it leads people to more services, it's successful because it leads people to people. During our initial application process, we explore people's talents and gifts. Then, as members begin to request services for themselves, they are aware of what they can also offer to other members. With time banking, one hour of service is equal to any other hour of service. This means, for example, that one member could mow someone's lawn for an hour and then bank that hour to use towards another member providing an hour of caregiving to their child, or to an elder. Aside from the time bank, N4 also has a robust volunteer program, information and referral system to help people access existing community resources, and a social program that encourages connecting with others. Check out our website: www.neighbornv.org. There you will find a couple of cool videos that describe the senior village movement, as well as the basics of time banking.
