The community based instructor III for dairy education will be an integral part of the agency’s agricultural literacy efforts. The specialist will be responsible for representing NDA at various school and community events and promoting Nevada’s dairy and dairy foods industry with emphasis on youth education. The central focus of this position will be the management of Moolissa, a life-size mechanical milking cow. This will include email and phone communication with school and community partners, scheduling Moolissa presentations, transporting and overseeing Moolissa and delivering dairy education presentations utilizing Moolissa. This position will report to the Nevada Department of Agriculture’s (NDA) office in Sparks for access to Moolissa, educational materials, and transportation. Hours will vary throughout the year based on requests for dairy education from school, nonprofits and others. Administration components such as scheduling and event coordination will be done remotely via personal email and/or phone. Employment is through June 30, 2018 with the potential to extend position through June 2019.
Essential Job Functions
• Plan and deliver dairy education to all ages at various school and community events.
• Manage NDA’s life-size mechanical milking cow at school and community events as a
tool for dairy education.
• Speak and present to audiences of all ages and group sizes.
• Ability to attend events during school hours and on weekends, including evenings.
• Ability to stand for up to 5 hours at a time.
• Ability to present outdoors, potentially in all weather conditions.
• Exposure to environmental allergens (grasses, weeds, pollens, trees, etc.)
• Ability to drive a pickup.
• Ability to attach, transport and detach a 25 foot cargo trailer.
• Ability to lift up to 65 pounds.
• Ability to communicate with supervisor and community partners via personal email and phone.
• Receive training on and implement new educational programming as needed.
• Statewide travel is required.
• Occasional overnight trips may be required.
• Ability to communicate with NDA staff and site contacts via personal email and/or cell phone.
Preferred Experience
• Experience in delivering youth education presentations.
• Experience in developing youth education presentations.
• Knowledge and/or experience of the dairy and dairy foods industry.
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
• A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
• A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
